The Open Championship Information:
In just about every place in the world, except for America, it's known simply as "The Open." First played in 1860, 35 years before the U.S. version, the British Open was held at a peculiar little course called Prestwick, where it would remain for 12 years. Willie Park was the first winner, battling 7 other golfers on a 12-hole course in which they traveled around 3 times. But it was the father and son team of Tom Morris Sr. and Tom Morris Jr. that ruled those early years. Old Tom Morris won four of the first eight matches, and then came along Young Tom Morris, who in 1868 won his first British Open at the age of 17. Then with an unheard-of score of 149, he won his third consecutive Open at 19. However, Young Tom sadly died in 1872 when he was just 21, following the death of his wife. The story goes that he died of a broken heart.

The following year the Open was moved for the first time to St. Andrews. For years after, the tournament was dominated by the English, including men such as Harry Vardon and James Braid. It wasn't until 1922 that the Americans took control, with Walter Hagen and Bobby Jones together winning 7 of 9 British Opens. But for all of his victories, Jones still managed to make the ultimate faux-pas. During the tournament of 1926, he left the course at the 18-hole turn in order to have some lunch in his room. But when he returned he realized he had forgotten his players' badge and was refused entry by a somewhat stubborn guard. He was then forced to buy a ticket, but went on to win the Open by two strokes over Al Watrous.

Since then, many notable golfers have battled for the Claret Jug, including Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan, and Tiger Woods. The oldest of all the majors, the British Open is known for its rich history and time-honored traditions. This year, the Open will again be played at St. Andrews in Fife, Scotland. Played over the Old Course for the 27th time since moving from Prestwick in 1873, the course has amazingly been through few changes, with some exceptions. The most recent change was a slight lengthening of the course by adding new championship tees, due to Tiger Woods' record 19-under-par score of 269 at the Millennium Open. As one of the original sites of the British Open, St. Andrews is the perfect place to experience the British Open.
